Prior to the influence of psychology and psychiatry pastoral counseling was one of the most respected and vital community activities of ministers of religion for centuries. It had always been the task of the clergy to minister to the spiritual needs of their parishioners. By referring to their religious doctrines they helped give meaning to life by providing spiritual solace to those in their care.

The dictionary defines “pastor” as one as a shepherd and spiritual guide and describes “counseling” as exchanging ideas but from latin counseling is described as wisdom and prudence. This constitutes a major barrier to psychiatry’s infiltration of churches because of the prime target for behavioral redesign. With ministers and theologists carrying the false gospel of mental hygiene pastoral conference became the focus of a concerted attack! Chisholm used World War 2 as evidence of traditional religion’s failure to provide the solution to man’s inhumanity to man.

In its place psychology and psychiatry began to peddle their superior brand of scientifically validated counseling. By 1952 83% of 109 seminaries and graduate theological schools surveyed in America had one or more courses on psychology. By 1961 between 8,000 and 9,000 clergymen in the United States had taken psychologically based “clinical pastoral” college courses.

Those who have sought spiritual guidance and moral instruction from the late forties onward have increasingly been the recipients of techniques and programs designed to bring the standards, attitudes, and behavior of individuals in line with mental hygiene. In Ed Bulkley book, “Why Christians Can’t Trust Psychology” he states:

“Few pastors are willing to take the time to examine the evidence, consider the implications, confront the deceptions, and inform their people about psychology’s failure to pass as a mental health science.” He also adds, “Christian Colleges and Seminaries have bought into this incredible deception and now enthusiastically encourage christians to submit to the insights, methods, and findings of secular psychology.
